Upsala Ekeby / Decorative Cobalt-Blue Dish Designer: Mari Simmulson (1911–2000) Manufacturer: Upsala Ekeby, Sweden Material: Glazed stoneware with inlaid relief mosaic Dimensions: H. 3 cm, D 17 cm Period: Circa 1960s Condition: Excellent condition with only minimal age-related patina A refined and intensely cobalt-blue decorative dish, distinguished by an inlaid central relief composition that exemplifies Simmulson’s characteristic intersection of Scandinavian formal restraint and chromatically expressive ornamentality. The work reveals a compelling tactile interplay between the luminous glaze surface and the raw ceramic texture within the mosaic field. Bio: Mari Simmulson was an Estonian-Swedish ceramic artist affiliated with Upsala Ekeby from 1949 onward, renowned for her sculptural idiom and chromatically rich decorative work; her pieces are represented in institutions such as the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and the Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg.
